Why homes stop cooling

Most cooling calls come down to two themes: air can’t move, or refrigerant metering isn’t right. Dirty filters, closed returns, or matted evaporator coils choke airflow and the system runs and runs without dropping temperature. On the refrigerant side, low charge, a sticking metering device, or a defrost/control issue on heat pumps can make air feel lukewarm or cause icing.

Our job is to get comfortable air back fast, then show you what we found—airflow, coil condition, charge/superheat/subcool, and control readings—so you can decide between a straightforward repair or longer-term upgrades.

What we repair (before we replace)

Central A/C

Compressors, capacitors/contactors, blower motors, evaporator/condenser coil issues, and thermostat or staging faults.

Heat Pumps (cool mode)

Defrost control and sensor problems, reversing valves, auxiliary heat staging that drags performance in shoulder seasons.

Ductless / Mini-Split

Indoor heads not cooling, drain float trips, fans/boards, and outdoor faults—quiet cooling restored without a change-out.

Airflow & Coils

Clogged filters, blocked returns, dirty/matted evaporators that ice up, and wheels/blowers that cut capacity.

Thermostats & Controls

Miswired stats, dying batteries, schedules/holds, and calls for cooling that never reach the equipment correctly.

Before you call: quick things to check

No tools, no panels—just simple confirmations that often save a visit.

Thermostat mode

Set to Cool, temperature below room temp, and Fan set to Auto. If battery-powered, try fresh batteries.

Filter & vents

Confirm a clean filter and open supply/return vents. Restricted air can make rooms warm or cause icing.

Breaker & furnace/air handler switch

Look for a tripped breaker (handle off-center). Turn fully off, then back on once. Make sure the nearby switch is on.

Condensate clues

Some systems stop cooling when the drain pan float switch lifts. If you see standing water at the air handler, book service.

Ice or frost

If the outdoor lines or indoor coil are iced, leave the system off and book service.

If a breaker trips again, or you notice persistent noises, odors, or short cycling, leave the system off and request service.

Our repair-first process

  • 1) Stabilize CoolingRestore cold air while we diagnose.
  • 2) Root-CauseAirflow, coils, charge, and controls—documented.
  • 3) Fix What’s FixableClean/adjust/replace only what restores reliability.
  • 4) Clear Close-OutPhotos, readings, and next steps for easy approvals.

Residential cooling FAQ

It’s blowing, but the air isn’t cold—what could that be?
Commonly airflow (filter/coil/returns) or refrigerant metering/charge. We verify coil condition and performance readings, correct the cause, and document results.
Unit freezes up—does that mean it’s done?
Not necessarily. Icing often points to airflow, charge, or a control issue. We thaw safely, correct the fault, and confirm normal operation.
Do you repair before suggesting replacement?
Yes. If a reliable repair restores performance, we stop there. If age/repeat failures point to replacement, we’ll show both options with photos and readings.
